Sydney Water is the current regulator of plumbing and drainage in Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains.

In June 2009, the NSW Government announced changes to plumbing regulation, including the move to a single plumbing regulator in NSW.

From mid 2010, Fair Trading will become the single regulator responsible for standard setting, licensing of plumbers and regulating onsite work.

As part of this change, Sydney Water's Plumbing Inspectors and Assurance Services (PIAS) will transfer to Fair Trading in early 2010, giving Fair Trading responsibility for onsite regulation of plumbing and drainage work in Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains.

Until the transfer occurs, Sydney Water will continue to handle all enquiries relating to inspections, as well as carry out supply plumbing and inspection services.
